Our story

Our story begins with leaving home. When we depart from the place that first held us, we begin to understand how memory travels, how belonging can feel fragile, and how stories carry us forward.

For To Build Her Home, that journey begins in Mauritius, the island homeland of our founder, Areena Antoine. Leaving as a child taught her that art can hold memory. Today, through the stories we choose to publish, that understanding guides our collective work of remembering, reconnecting, and building home in the world.

We welcome emerging and established storytellers to share their work with us. At this time, submissions are open to storytellers across Canada. To Build Her Home publishes academic writing, film, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual art.

Driven by Connection

Continue to rely on your heart. You don’t need to prove or justify who you are, your roots, or your story. You already belong. You always have. You don’t need to dig for it, girl. You are it.
